Some 70% of the population in Sub-Saharan Africa lives in rural areas. Efficient and effective provision of rural access and mobility facilitates the achievement of rural growth and poverty reduction objectives. Fundamental to achieving such efficiency and effectiveness is sound policies on rural transport, which encompass infrastructure (roads, tracks, footpaths, and waterways), transport means and services. SSATP since the inception of the Rural Travel and Transport Program (RTTP) in early 1990s supports the development and adoption of good policies and practices and links them with operational programs of other development partners to enable translation of policies into actions. Capacities for rural transport policy and practice have been improved, and important lessons learnt from case studies for future replication.
