Ensuring the Sustainability of Corridors Management Institutions
This presentation entitled 'Ensuring the Sustainability of Corridors Management Institutions' was made at SSATP's Annual General Meeting in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. The presentation posits that there is a mismatch between the high importance given to Corridors Management Institutions (CMIs) and the lack of support for ensuring the sustainability of their operations. In fact, most CMIs with permanent secretariats in Africa face the critical challenge of financial sustainability in the long run. While some CMIs have managed to cope with the challenges (Central and Northern Corridors), others are struggling (Trans Kalahari Corridor, Dar Corridor and Walvis Bay-Ndola Lumbumbashi) and/or have ceased to exist (Mapupto and Abidjan-Lagos corridors). Lessons learned point to the importance of having a proper institutional framework, robust strategic plans, and sustainable sources of financing to ensure the long-term sustainability of CMIs.
