First African Road Safety Forum in Marrakech
According to the World Health Organization's 2015 Global Road Safety Situation Report, nearly 1.25 million people die every year on the roads despite progress in this area. However, while the number of motorized vehicles in the world is growing rapidly, the number of people killed on the roads is stabilizing, as is the global population, which means that actions taken in favor of road safety in the past years have saved lives.
The Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020) called on countries to implement concrete measures to make their roads safer. At the level of Africa, a continental plan of action was developed during an expert meeting in November 2011 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, by the Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the United Nations African Union. On the eve of the end of this decade, and although some countries have made significant progress, the situation of road safety in Africa remains a matter of concern.
Still, the African continent presents enormous possibilities to improve road safety and save more lives. Reputed as a continent with high potential for economic development, insecurity on the roads must not compromise and mortgage these potentialities. The establishment of a sustainable road safety strategy in our continent is an absolute requirement.
Committed to different levels alongside African countries, the Ministry of Equipment, Transport, Logistics and Water of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Africa Transport Policy Program (SSATP) will co-host the 1st Forum on Road Safety in Africa. This Forum is a platform for exchanging expertise and good practices in this area. It is also a question of capitalizing on each other's achievements in road safety so that the socio-economic and cultural similarities between African countries are assets and key factors of success.
As road safety is a pivotal issue, creating added value in this field is a real challenge for all governments. The strategic and institutional management of road safety, the financing of strategies, the steering of strategies, the integration of new technologies, capacity building, the integration of road safety in the management of companies, studies and research as well as that openness to the components of non-governmental organizations (civil society) are the main axes that will be discussed in this forum, the first of its kind in Africa.
Moreover, in addition to scientific and technical discussions, the opportunity will be given to meetings and exchanges between institutional actors, professionals and components of civil society. In this context, a large exhibition will be organized to serve as a relay to the panels and to enable stakeholders in African countries to make themselves known, conduct B to B and B to G meetings in order to build relationships and promote their business in the field of road safety.
The organization of this continental forum under the theme "Road Safety in Africa: Sustainable Development Issue" in the red city of Marrakech is a logical continuation and a capitalization on the work of COP22 and its declaration for the action in favor of our climate and Sustainable Development.
