1st ARSO Workshop in Dakar: Towards the Establishment of a Road Safety Observatory in Africa
The Africa Transport Policy Program (SSATP), in collaboration with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), and the International Transport Forum (ITF) delivered the first workshop “Towards the establishment of a Road Safety Observatory in Africa”, in Dakar, Senegal on February 20-21, 2018. The workshop presented to and discussed with participants, the proposal to develop a Regional road safety observatory for Africa. It also gave the participants an opportunity to present the challenges and opportunities faced around road safety data collection in their countries.
Seven delegations participated in this workshop from the following countries: Benin, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania. Participation was from both the Transport and Health sectors. Other participants included representatives from the following organizations: UNECA, WHO, Islamic Development Bank (ISDB), France’s Observatoire National Interministériel de Sécurité Routiére (ONISR), Sweden’s Swedish Transport Administration, and EU-funded project Safer Africa.
Participating countries and partner organizations showed strong interest in formalizing the establishment of a Road Safety Observatory (RSO) in Africa to measure progress toward the targets of the African Action Plan for Road Safety, the UN Decade of Action and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) targets related to safe mobility, and to support in-country evidence-based road safety management; SSATP and the World Bank team will continue to work closely with FIA and ITF on the activities to further the collaboration, in coordination with other partner organizations (WHO, UNECA), and reaching out to other partners who have expressed interested in joining this initiative (AfDB, IsDB). The AU will be kept informed of all developments in order to ensure that their mandate to inform and support member countries in this agenda can be fulfilled.
This document summarizes attendees, agenda and outcomes of the 1st workshop held in Dakar which culminated with a Declaration on the intention to establish an all African countries road safety observatory.
