Examples of Public and Private Initiatives for Tackling HIV/AIDS
HIV/AIDS programs do exist which encompass policy, strategy and service delivery engaging road, rail, and other transport systems, principally directed at prevention. Such activities have been undertaken by the public and private sectors, including through public-private partnerships.
Examples include The Great Lakes HIV/AIDS Initiative (GLIA, underwritten entirely by the public sector), the North Star Alliance in southern Africa (a private-public sector partnership), and the Federation of Eastern and Southern African Road Transport Associations' (FESARTA) - SADC Global Fund HIV Project, which aimed to monitor and scale up its “Wellness Centers,” which are combinations of health clinic and educational facilities using converted shipping containers located at "hot spots" along major corridors.
