Third African Road Safety Conference
The Third African Road Safety Conference will focus on the mid-term review of the Road Safety Action Plan (2011-2020). The Conference is organized by the United Nation Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Union Commission (AUC) in collaboration with the Global Road Safety Facility, the African Transport Policy Programme (SSATP), and the International Road Federation (IRF). It will take place on 9 to 10 July in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and.
The United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 64/255 that proclaimed 2011-2020 as the Decade of Action for Road Safety in March 2010. It is now midway in the implementation of the African Action Plan for the Decade.
The overall objectives of the Third African Road Safety Conference is to ensure the effective participation of Africa at the 2nd Global High Level Conference on Road Safety to be held in Brasilia on 18-19 November 2015, which will review progress in implementing the Global Plan for the Decade.
The specific objectives of the Addis Ababa Conference are to:
- Determine the extent to which member States have implemented the African Road Safety Action Plan;
- Identify the challenges to the implementation of the Action Plan as well as the remedial measures;
- Assess the implications of including road safety targets in the proposed Sustainable Development Goals;
- Discuss plans by development partners to support the implementation of road safety activities in Africa;
- Discuss African participation at the global review of the Decade to be held in Brasilia.
The Conference will be attended by various African Government Ministries, National Road Safety Authorities and Councils, African sub-regional and regional organizations, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), academic and research institutions, and the private sector.
